When an oceanographic team took a shark tracking robot to the Gulf of Mexico, they didn't expect that the sharks would fight back. But that's just what happened in this video, unearthed by Gregory L. Charvat at Hackaday, in which a shark goes after its stalker.
The team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, who took the video and allowed it to be used as part of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, think the shark may have mistaken the sub drone for a seal. The team first suspected something was up when the controls on the vehicle misbehaved, and the sub cut off communication before surfacing again with flecks of paint missing.
The REMUS vehicle was equipped with GoPro cameras, meaning the Woods Hole team was able to see the attack in action from a number of possible angles. The great white tried its best to eat the drone and didn't quite succeed, but it did damage it severely, meaning that it at least won this round of "sharks vs. robots."
