It is campaign time and so, it is a time for jabs, songs, drama
republics, it was politicians themselves that often led proverbial and witty political songs which their supporters and drummers echoed over the bears. This lingered till the Second Republic, although some musicians and other artistes had, by then, started raising songs for their political mentors. In the South West, the likes of Sikiru Ayinde
(poetry) exponent, Lanrewaju
instance stood to be counted.
But the Third Republic sort of bequeathed theme songs that were popular on radio and television. Among such was ‘MKO, is our man
strengthened
o’, which
Nigerian masses and the late MKO Abiola, who overwhelmingly won the June 12 1993 presidential election that was annulled by the Ibrahim Babangida regime.
In 2007, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic
Agbaje, also had a popular campaign song –‘Everybody loves Jimi Agbaje’. But this time, the theme song of the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Mr. Akin Ambode, is the one that seems to be rocking the airwaves, especially in Lagos. Themed ‘I believe’, it seeks to market the candidate’s ideas, operating on what may pass for the Lagos of the indigenes and residents’ dream.
The producers are smart enough to
brought into the production
actresses and musicians. Indeed, it becomes a reunion for actor-turned
Elliot, who
Desmond
House of Assembly election, and his fellow entertainers such as
Banky W, Yemi Alade and Uti Nwachukwu. With this, while Nollywood players such as Patience Ozokwor, Ibinabo
Rita Dominic are
Goodluck Jonathan, the ‘I Believe’ song and video potentially attract attention for Ambode, who also pays a major part in it.
The producers appear to
number of things simultaneously. By featuring the stars, they are
Ambode to their (entertainers’)
featuring Ambode himself in the ‘band’, they are projecting him as feeling at home among the stars – among
populace.
In terms of the message of the lyrics and softness of the sound, the producers further seem to be projecting an Ambode that is cerebral and humble – and also believes in inspiring other people to come together for communal development.
A statement from the producers puts it thus, “In the commercial, Mr. Ambode rallies people of all walks of life to believe in Lagos as the place where each person can play a part and fulfill potentials. Showcasing
tomorrow, professionals,
leading artistes, traders, key opinion formers from diverse ethnic backgrounds expressing their belief in Lagos for various reasons, the candidate merely agrees
words are, ‘I believe together we can build the Lagos of our dreams.’
